YouTube Rewind has become something of a ritual over the ten years it has been going on. But this year, YouTube announced that it wouldn’t be making the YouTube Rewind 2020 video.
As you’ll surely know, Rewind is a high-budget production that is usually released every December by youtube. Still, this year in November, the video-sharing platform announced that it would not be producing the rewind this year.

YouTube Rewind 2020
For those who don’t know, YouTube Rewind is basically a video series produced by YouTube and Portal A Interactive to mark the end of every year.
YouTube started this trend in 2010 with the first video named “YouTube rewind 2010: Year in Review”.
Thus throughout the last decade, these videos showed an overview and a recap of each year’s viral videos, events, trends, and music, with the number of featured YouTube personalities increasing every year.
The series installments were uploaded at the year’s end on the official channel of YouTube. The annual installments were actually quite popular initially, but slowly they turned controversial, and gradually, they declined to the extent of being cringe.
The problem was that there were always disagreements amongst viewers over who was and who wasn’t included in the rewind video. These disagreements were quite apparent in the 2018 and 2019 videos when both Rewind videos received more dislikes than likes.
The 2018 video even recorded the most disliked video with 18 million downvotes and only 2.9 million upvotes. The reason was attributed to the exclusion of high-profile YouTubers such as PewDiePie.
The 2019 review, much the same way, didn’t do much better; despite the efforts to make light of the previous year’s unpopularity, it became the third most disliked video on the platform.

Why is this year’s installment being canceled?
In November, YouTube issued the following statement “Since 2010, we’ve ended the year with Rewind: a look back at the year’s most impactful creators, videos, and trends. Whether you love it – or only remember 2018 – Rewind was always meant to be a celebration of you, But 2020 has been different. It doesn’t feel right to carry on as if it weren’t. So, we’re taking a break from Rewind this year.” it stated
The statement ended with praise words for the YouTubers who worked hard to bring smiles to the viewers’ faces in such troubling times.
Thus it seems the rewind series is at a pause for now. YouTube did not state whether Rewind will return for 2021. Like all other things right now, it seems that it depends on how the future pans out.
