Apple Asks Developers to Return their M1 DTKs Mac Mini!? : Technology

Last year, during November month, M1 Mac came out in the market. Its release took place after the arrival of custom Mac mini. Apple company want their products to feature Apple Silicon chips instead of the Intel processors. Thus, the latter came out with A12Z Bionic chip since it enables macOS apps to support the new ARM platform. Together, it was called the Developer Transition Kit or DTK.

On February 3, 2021, Apple gave out a mail to the developers stating that they must return this DTK. It so because, the kit was a protocol to test the apps and its functioning in Apple Silicon Macs. So, developers who were part of this Universal App Quick Start Program will be getting instructions regarding its return.

The mail read “Now that the new MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro powered by M1 are available, it’ll soon be time to return the Developer Transition Kit (DTK) that was sent to you as part of the program”. Details and question about it are still getting confirmations from the Apple company. Till now, we have concrete news saying that the Mac mini DTK owners must return it in its original packaging.

The cost of Mac mini DTK was $500 and thus, it would definitely be a loss if there are no compensations made. Apple is sure of not refunding the full amount and instead, it offers a $200 credit.

Those who return the DTK will receive a receipt regarding the product return. This receipt will have codes which on redemption will provide discount while buying a new M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or Mac mini equipped with an M1 chip. This implies the developers will buy the base model of Mac mini with M1 chip at the same cost of DTK.  May 31, 2021, is the deadline for this redemption process.

Even though, some app makers are unhappy with this compensation. They say that it won’t cover even a third of the cost of Apple’s $700 Mac mini. Well, they do have a point but there is no response or discussion regarding it, until now.

The last point to note among this buzz is to stay in touch with the Apple company for a few weeks. There will be more facts coming out along with the instructions stating the procedure of the return of the test box.
