Mediatek Finally Beats Qualcomm!
The big news of the week was, for the first time in History Mediatek overtakes Qualcomm in sales for Q3. MediaTek, a Taiwanese chipmaker, mostly makes chipsets for Budget Smartphones. According to the report, MediaTek has gained 31 percent of the global market share of smartphone chipsets in Q3 2020.
Reason For The Big Jump
While, the earlier MediaTek chipsets, were continuously criticized owing to their poor optimization, which led to the heating up of phones. But, Mediatek decided to launch the G series chipsets. The G series helped a lot in capturing the market. These chipsets mainly focused on the gaming aspect. The Helio G90T was the best of the lot, and several phones used them. Dimensity Chips were also launched in order to capture the 5G market. However, Mediatek failed to beat Qualcomm in this segment.
Research Director Dale Gai said that, ” MediaTek’s market share gain in Q3 2020 was mainly possible due to three reasons, which were, strong success in the mid-range smartphone segment and emerging markets such as LATAM and MEA, the United States ban on Huawei, and eventually beating it in leading OEMs such as Samsung, Xiaomi, and Honor.”
Mediatek also powered the World’s cheapest 5G smartphone which was the Realme V3. However, it still has a lot of ground to capture in the region where its competitor, Qualcomm, has dominated.
It will be interesting to see, how Mediatek fairs in 2021. The big competition will be between the Dimensity Chipsets and the Snapdragon 888. Stay Tuned!!!
