The gaming industry is booming, but its workforce doesn’t always reflect the diversity of its player base. Organizations like the KB Foundation are working to change that by providing underrepresented youth with access to career exploration and mentorship opportunities within the gaming sector. Gamestanza recognizes the importance of this initiative, as a more inclusive gaming industry benefits everyone.

This past month, the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy (FIEA) welcomed the KB Foundation and 28 young people in its Philadelphia-based mentorship programs for a tour of FIEA facilities. The trip provided a glimpse into the degrees available and potential future careers in the gaming industry. Students also had the opportunity to visit UCF’s main campus, UCF Downtown, Creative Village, and Electronic Arts.

“At the KB Foundation Inc., our approach to career exploration activities is about exposing our youth to what it is like for a day in the life of any given career,” says Kirk Berry, Founder and CEO of the KB Foundation. “Hearing about a career is one way to learn, but spending time doing a small part of the career is a more impactful way to learn about it.”

FIEA: A Gateway to Gaming Careers

The KB Foundation’s partnership with FIEA is particularly significant because it shines a spotlight on a specialized and often overlooked career path. FIEA, located at the UCF Downtown campus, offers a Master of Science in Interactive Entertainment, a program renowned for its industry connections and cutting-edge curriculum.

“This partnership came about because our vice president of operations and programming, Justin Fishman,” Berry says. “He saw it as an opportunity to give our youth an opportunity to experience an extremely specialized career field. Since the University of Central Florida has a direct career path to the gaming industry, it will show our youth what is required to pursue such a skilled profession.”

Expanding Horizons

Tyler Cholminski, a high school junior and mentee in the KB Foundation and College Possible programs, speaks to the transformative impact of these experiences. “I just started with the program a month ago,” Cholminski says. “They have already taught me so much. More than just preparing for college, I’ve learned about life.”

Leveling Up with Technology: FIEA’s Cutting-Edge Facilities and Immersive Tech

From VR to Motion Capture: Hands-On Experience with Industry-Standard Tools

One of the most impressive aspects of FIEA is its commitment to providing students with hands-on experience using industry-standard tools and technology. This immersive approach to education is crucial for preparing students for the realities of game development, which relies heavily on cutting-edge technology.

During their visit, students had the opportunity to explore FIEA’s state-of-the-art facilities, including its VR labs, motion capture studios, and game development studios. They learned about the technology and work that goes into creating virtual reality games and, through a demo, stepped onto the sets of popular shows, movies, and games such as Mario Kart, Harry Potter, and Stranger Things.

Students also went behind the scenes to learn more about the magic behind motion capture and try it for themselves. They geared up in motion capture suits and experimented with capturing their own movements, which would then be used to animate characters in games.

Showcasing Innovation: FIEA’s Technological Prowess and its Impact on Education

FIEA’s investment in advanced technologies like VR and motion capture is not just about giving students access to the latest tools; it’s about fostering innovation and creativity. Gamestanza believes that this hands-on learning environment allows students to push the boundaries of what’s possible in game design and storytelling.

By immersing themselves in these technologies, students gain a deeper understanding of how games are made and the complex technical processes involved. This knowledge is invaluable as the gaming industry continues to evolve and embrace new technologies.

The Future of Gaming: How FIEA is Preparing Students for Emerging Trends

FIEA is constantly evolving to keep pace with the ever-changing landscape of the gaming industry. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in emerging fields like augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain gaming.

Gamestanza recognizes the importance of this forward-thinking approach. By preparing students for the future of gaming, FIEA is ensuring that the next generation of game developers is ready to tackle the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
