Ukraine urges game firms like EA and Steam to shut down gaming servers in Russia
Officials in Kiev say that the gaming servers are being used by the Russian military to interfere with Ukrainian telecommunications. “Russian game companies have been using their games as a tool to conduct information warfare against Ukraine,” said one official.
Ukrainian authorities have also asked Google, Facebook, and other internet firms to suspend services in Russia. So far, only Google has agreed to comply with Kiev’s request.
The appeal has been sent to the worldwide gaming community, including PlayStation, Xbox, and other game development firms and esports platforms.
In a letter addressed to these platforms, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has requested for a complete ban on Russia. Fedorov pointed out that the firms are aware of Russia’s “bloody authoritarian aggression” and should “do everything possible to protect Ukraine” from its assaults. Russian officials have dismissed Kiev’s allegations, calling them “baseless.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is not involved in any cyber-attacks against Ukraine. “We don’t know what they’re talking about,” he said.
The gaming industry has become an important tool in the Russian government’s information warfare arsenal. In addition to using gaming servers to interfere with Ukrainian telecommunications, the Russian military has also used games like “Warface” and “Call of Duty” to recruit soldiers.
Ukrainian authorities say that they will continue to pressure game companies to shut down their servers in Russia. “We will do everything possible to make sure that Russian game companies are not allowed to operate in Ukraine,” said one official.
This is just the latest in a series of punitive measures taken by Kiev against Moscow. In addition to shutting down Russian websites, Ukraine has also imposed sanctions on Russian individuals and businesses.
