You may remember the 2002 game WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos. The new game, WarCraft III: Reforged is the same old game, but with revamped graphics. The game released in January 2020.
To start with, the game was never liked by the players. Why? Because it was destined to be a remake, but Blizzard Entertainment did something strange with it. The game is so much ‘developed’ that it does not contain much of the original game.
The game has mixed WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos with The Frozen Throne, its expansion pack released in 2003, to make a piece of artwork nobody wanted to see. Keeping the plot the same, the game has some style and graphic changes. But it was enough to ruin the likes of the fans who enjoyed the original game.
The game was so full of bugs at the time of launch that the developers offered a full refund for every purchase.
The game scored lowest in Metacritic, with a devastating score of 0.5/10. It held the record for being the lowest scored game ever at the time. And that review was from almost 14000 users. And worse, the developers wanted to update all the existing copies of the original game to the newer version. It meant everybody playing the old game would have to face the ‘improvements’. Players and reviewers criticized for destroying a masterpiece and also for not paying heed to the technical issues prior to the release.
A Remake Not Required
The game actually was better left untouched. WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos was praised by all its players and also received several award nominations. The fantasy strategy title was the winner of the Game of the Year Award. The game sold 4.4 million copies altogether. The developers had to do a big task altering the gameplay for the likes of the players in the midway of development.
The remake is actually a failure. This game claims that it contains visual and gameplay improvements, but it is not the case. It contains three difficulty levels, but the gameplay is far from impressive. Though some players liked the game after the bugs were fixed, the overall reaction still remains negative.
Remakes are never the original. While some are better than the original, we see that it is certainly not the case with Warcraft III. Fans tend to avoid this game, but they do not have much choice now. New players may like it because of its improved graphics and the same storyline as the original game, which is great.
